Affiliate marketing is an online marketing practice where an online merchant gives a small amount of money to a website it’s affiliated with for each unique visitor they attract to the business due to the affiliate marketing.

While many online retailers continue to shy away from this practice as a legitimate marketing strategy, affiliates are becoming more prevalent in the online business model. The fact is, many e-tailers have embraced affiliate marketing because of the reduced financial risk involved. Furthermore, affiliate marketing works alongside the other more tested marketing practices such as SEO, bookmarking and search engine marketing. It can also involve using Master Resale Rights

Indeed, affiliate marketing is at its most effective when used strategically parallel to the following alternative e-marketing practices: SEO, paid search engine marketing and e-mail marketing. Websites using Web 2.0 practices, including blogging, user communities and RSS feeds have found success with integrating affiliate marketing practices in these areas as well.

Affiliate marketing networks tend to vary in structure. Most are hierarchical and pay out within a certain pecking order. Very few use two-tier programs Not to be confused with multi-level marketing (MLM) or network marketing programs which have more requirements in order to get paid a commission, affiliate marketing programs have few requirements for involvement.

Currently, it is commonplace for merchants to use the cost per sale (CPS) method. This CPS method works like this: if a merchant receives a sale as a direct result of a customer clicking on a link at an affiliate’s site, the affiliate marketer is paid. Older methods including cost per mile are becoming less common for compensating affiliates

Affiliate marketing is regulated internally by the marketplace and its most successful entrepreneurs. Much like the early days of the internet or of civilization itself, affiliate marketers often operate as rogue and singular practitioners which may account for the many failed attempts at creating an industry-wide school of best practice for affiliate marketers.

I believe that if anyone wants to make money online, they can try the route of affiliate marketing. There are many successful affiliate marketers out there so I’m sure you can also succeed.
